The Atlantic Telegraph Company and the London Telegraph Company had a 50 year monopoly through a charter granted by the Newfoundland legislature. The two companies merged and operated as the Anglo-American Telegraph Company. They could charge what they wanted and they did.

Located on the Canso Peninsula in Eastern Guysborough County, Nova Scotia; Hazel Hill, was developed as a “gated English community” dedicated to providing a community with all the amenities and opportunities the English Operators would expect. There are many examples in Canada where companies built communities to house blue collared workers to be employed in their companies. Hazel Hill is a fine and rare example of a white collared community being developed by an employer.
