The Fascinating History of The Commercial Cable Company

Unique Architecture

“The Hazel Hill ‘Canso Station’ is one of the finest technologically advanced and best outfitted stations of our time”.
Commercial Cable Company publication at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition, Chicago

The building was constructed of brick and local granite with a metal seamed roof construction. It is a Neo-Classical style with ceremonial arched entry, gabled walls and three arched gable(d) windows.

Another defining element is the suspended concrete floor that was a technological advancement in its day. The interior featured mosaic tiled floors, pressed metal ceilings and several fireplaces. The existing building constructed in 1888 and expanded in 1899 replaced the original wooden structure that was built in 1884.
